LSO to tour China in June and launches new social media strategy in the country

The London Symphony Orchestra tours China next month (Friday 15 – Thursday 21 June) with Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda and the pianist Yefim Bronfman.

They’ll be performing Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, music by Dvořák and Ravel, and piano concertos by Beethoven and Liszt.

The seven-city tour will include return visits to Beijing and to Shanghai, as well as Tianjin and Wuhan. They’ll debut in Changsha, Nanjing and Shenzhen.

What really piqued my interest in the press release I received about this was the news that the LSO has now launched on Chinese social media platforms WeChat and Weibo. That makes the LSO the first British orchestra with a social media presence in China.

I’m pleased to read about that. I’m not surprised either. It’s a testament to the sterling work of Jo Johnson who has lead on social at the LSO since 2005, She featured in a film* I made that year about marketing classical music. Nice work, Jo.

*Please overlook the rather bizarre seating arrangement in the opening shot. I have no idea what was going on in the lead up to that interview.
