Really pleased to learn of Michael Bochmann’s MBE in this year’s Birthday Honours list today.
Michael has been leader of the ESO since (I’m fairly certain) it’s beginning in the late 70s under William Boughton. A loyal and a passionate musician, Michael’s Lark Ascending (amongst other ESO/Nimbus recordings) played an important part in Classic FM’s early playlists in the mid-nineties.
Embezzlement and an untimely death have threatened the ESO during its near 40 year history. Michael’s gong is an acknowledgment of his ceaseless commitment to professional music-making. Oh, and of course, he’s a brilliant violinist too. Menuhin wouldn’t have agreed to work with him if he wasn’t.
