Mahler 2 / Berlin Philharmonic

This should be brief. When you listen to the best orchestra in the world conducted by Simon Rattle, there’s very little to really say anyway.

Last night’s performance still lingers this morning: breathtaking dynamic range and pin-sharp precision would be the obvious things to point out. Stunning feats of musical dexterity – a high note on a trumpet devoid of vibrato clearly demonstrated the technical excellence this band’s global reputation is partially built on.

And then, of course, Rattle. A diminutive white-haired wizard brimming with humility. A musical power-house only too happy to stand at the back of the podium whilst the audience applauded the 100+ players and accompanying chorus.

An incredible night. A fantastic treat.
