Death announced of The Onedin Line’s Peter Gilmore

Peter Gilmore in everday garb

News was announced today that Peter Gilmore – lead in the BBC TV Sunday teatime drama The Onedin Line – has died. He was 81.

With his passing, unexpectedly fond memories of the family congregating in front of the television to watch a programme I now recall as being rather dull, now start flooding back.

My parents seemed to like it and I do certainly remember the music – the Adagio from the ballet Spartacus by Khachaturian – leaving its mark.

If memory serves me correctly too, it was one of a handful of pieces we played in the school orchestra.

This recording  of the Adagio played by the Bournemouth Symphony under the direction of Karabits and his glassy stare seems a fitting tribute.
