We're all really, really excited. Honest.

We’re all really, really excited. Honest.

Exciting news out today for those like me occupying Planet Britten, is that the gorgeously lovely people at the BFI are screening a special series of films and programmes in addition to a few events dedicated to the East Suffolk hero.

Benjamin Britten at 100 at BFI Southbank includes screenings of GPO Film Unit docs, a re-mastered screening of The Turn of the Screw from 1959, previews of new films by Tony Palmer and John Bridcut’s  (Britten’s Endgame to be broadcast on BBC Four later this year). The  season is introduction by Britten biographer Paul Kildea (who will no doubt have a few questions put to him about ‘that’ biography published earlier this year).

BBC productions of  Owen Wingrave (1961), Billy Budd, and Gloriana also feature in the season, plus Derek Jarman’s homage to the War Requiem, Death in Venice (1981) and Peter Grimes  filmed at Snape 1969 – the make-up team was considerable (pictured above). All in all its a bit of an Britten opera feast. I want to see all of them (please).

The Britten100 season is presented in collaboration with the Britten-Pears Foundation. Dates and times included below. More info on the BFI at Southbank website.
